Split PDF File
Split into one or multiple PDF files.
Split PDF is a free online tool from Tool Hub Zone that breaks one PDF into smaller files. Upload a PDF, choose the pages or page ranges you want to separate, and download the result. It is handy when you only need a few pages from a long document, or when one large file must be sent in parts. It is part of our PDF tools, and no account is needed.
How to Split a PDF
- Upload your PDF using the tool above.
- Enter the pages or the page range you want to separate.
- Start the split and wait for it to finish.
- Download the new file or files and open them to check the pages.
How Are Page Ranges Written?
Most PDF tools understand a few simple patterns. These examples show the usual way of writing them.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| 5 | Only page 5 |
| 1-3 | Pages 1, 2 and 3 |
| 2,4,6 | Pages 2, 4 and 6 only |
| 1-3, 8-10 | Pages 1 to 3 and pages 8 to 10 |
Splitting vs. Extracting Pages
People use these words in different ways, so it helps to know what you actually want.
- Splitting usually means cutting a document into several smaller files, for example one file per chapter.
- Extracting means pulling out a few pages you need and leaving the rest behind.
Choose the page ranges that match your goal. If you want chapters, enter each chapter’s range. If you want only a few pages, enter only those pages.
When Splitting a PDF Helps
- Sending part of a document: Share only the relevant pages, not an entire contract or report.
- Uploads with limits: Some portals reject large files. Smaller parts can fit.
- Separating scanned bundles: A single scan of many documents can be divided into the individual papers.
- Study and reference: Keep one chapter or one exercise sheet as its own file.
- Removing unwanted pages: Keep the pages you need and leave out a cover or blank page.
Will the Parts Add Up to the Same Size?
Roughly, yes. If you split a 10 MB PDF into two equal parts, each part is often close to 5 MB, but not exactly. Pages with large pictures take up more space than pages of plain text, so the sizes can differ. Fonts and shared resources are sometimes repeated in each new file, which can make the total a little larger than the original.
What Might Change After Splitting?
The page content stays the same. Features that depend on the whole document, such as the table of contents, bookmarks, and links that jump to other pages, may stop working in the smaller files if their target pages are no longer included. Please check any links or references in your new files.
Combine, Compress or Convert Next
After splitting, you can put selected pieces back together with Merge PDF, which is useful when you want pages from different files in a new order. If a part is still too large to send, shrink it with Compress PDF.
Tips for a Clean Split
- Check the page numbers in your PDF viewer before you type a range. The number printed on the page can differ from its position in the file.
- Keep your original PDF until you are sure the new files are right.
- Rename the downloaded files so you can tell the parts apart.
- Do not upload confidential documents, such as IDs or bank statements, to any free online tool.
