When a WebP File Won’t Open Where You Need It
You save a picture from a website, and instead of the usual JPG you get a WebP file. Then the trouble starts. An upload form says “unsupported format.” Your photo editor refuses to open it. A client can’t view it on their old computer. WebP is great for fast websites, but it’s still not accepted everywhere. Converting it to PNG fixes all of that in a few seconds.
This WebP to PNG converter does the job in your browser. It’s one of the free helpers on Tool Hub Zone, and you can find more in our image tools section.
Steps to Convert WebP to PNG
- Upload your WebP file from your phone or computer.
- Run the converter and wait a moment.
- Preview the image and check the edges and background.
- Download the PNG.
Why You Keep Getting WebP Files
Google created WebP to make web images lighter, and today Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all support it. Many websites, WordPress plugins, and content delivery networks convert images to WebP automatically to pass Google PageSpeed Insights checks. So when you right click and save, the file arrives as WebP even though it looked like a normal picture on screen.
The catch is the software that has not caught up. Older versions of Windows Photo Viewer, some Microsoft Office builds, and a number of email clients and government portals still don’t handle WebP well.
Why PNG Is a Safe Choice
PNG is lossless, so the converted file holds exactly the pixels from the WebP, with no extra quality loss. It also supports transparency, so a WebP logo with a see-through background stays see-through. And almost every program, from Photoshop to Canva to PowerPoint, opens it without fuss.
If you only need a photo and don’t care about transparency, a JPG would be smaller. PNG is the better pick for logos, screenshots, graphics with text, and anything you plan to edit more than once.
What to Expect From the Result
Bigger file. PNG files are usually larger than WebP, sometimes by a lot. That’s the price of lossless storage and wide compatibility.
Same look. The picture should look identical to the WebP. Conversion can’t bring back detail that a lossy WebP had already thrown away.
Animated WebP. Some WebP files are animations. A PNG is a still image, so you may only get the first frame. For moving pictures, a video or GIF format is a better target, such as GIF to MP4 if you end up with a GIF.
Common Situations
- Job and school portals: Many only accept JPG or PNG for photos and signatures.
- Design work: Open the file in an editor that doesn’t support WebP yet.
- Stickers and logos: Keep transparency while using a format everyone can open.
- Documents and slides: Insert the image into Word or PowerPoint without errors.
- Sharing with others: Avoid the “I can’t open this” reply.
After You Convert
If the PNG is too heavy for an upload limit, shrink it with the Image Compressor. If you actually want to go back to WebP for your own website, use PNG to WebP or JPG to WebP. And if the image has a messy backdrop, Remove Background can clean it up.
About Your Uploads

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert WebP to PNG for free?
Upload the WebP file, run the converter, and download the PNG. No account is needed.
Will I lose quality?
No new quality is lost in the conversion. The PNG matches the WebP you uploaded.
Does it keep the transparent background?
Yes, PNG supports transparency. Open the result on a colored page to confirm.
Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?
