Control How Your Link Looks When Someone Shares It

You paste a link into WhatsApp, and instead of a clean card with a picture and a headline, you get a bare URL or a random image from the sidebar. That is what happens when a page has no Open Graph tags. Open Graph is a set of meta tags, introduced by Facebook, that tells social platforms which title, description, and image to show when a link is shared. This generator builds those tags for you, so you only fill in the fields and copy the code.

It’s one of the free helpers on Tool Hub Zone, and you can find more in our SEO tools section.

Steps to Generate Open Graph Tags

  1. Enter the page title, a short description, and the page URL.
  2. Add the full address of your preview image.
  3. Choose the content type, such as website or article, if the tool offers it.
  4. Copy the code and paste it inside the <head> section of your page.

On WordPress, Rank Math and Yoast SEO have a Social tab where you can set the same fields without editing code.

The Four Tags You Really Need

og:title. The headline shown on the card. It can differ from your search title, so make it clear and inviting.

og:description. One or two lines under the headline. Keep it short, since some apps cut it early.

og:image. The picture on the card. This tag has the biggest effect on clicks.

og:url. The preferred address of the page, which keeps likes and shares pointing to one version.

Useful extras are og:type (website, article, product), og:site_name, and og:locale for the language.

Open Graph Image Size That Works

The safe choice is 1200 by 630 pixels, a ratio of roughly 1.91 to 1. That size looks sharp on Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp, and it fits large link cards on X. Keep the file under about 1 MB when you can, use JPG or PNG, and place important text and faces away from the edges, because some apps crop. The image address must be a full URL starting with https://, not a relative path. If the picture is too heavy, shrink it with the Image Compressor, and fit it to the right dimensions with the Image Resizer.

Twitter Cards and Other Platforms

X (formerly Twitter) reads its own twitter:card tags first, but falls back to Open Graph when they’re missing. For most sites, good OG tags are enough. If you want a large image card, add twitter:card with the value summary_large_image. LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and Discord all read Open Graph tags too, so one set of tags covers almost everywhere.

Why the Old Preview Keeps Showing

Platforms save a copy of your preview the first time a link is shared. If you fix your tags afterwards and the old card still appears, you’re looking at a cached version. Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector let you fetch the page again and refresh the card. WhatsApp can hold on to the old preview for a while, so changing the image file name sometimes helps.

Common Mistakes

  • Missing og:image: The platform guesses, often picking a logo or an ad.
  • Image too small: Under 600 pixels wide usually shows as a tiny thumbnail.
  • Relative image path: /images/cover.jpg fails. Use the full https address.
  • Same tags on every page: Each page needs its own title, description, and picture.
  • Blocked image: A picture behind a login or blocked by robots rules can’t be fetched.
  • Special characters: Type a plain ampersand, not &amp;, in your fields.

Pair It With Your Search Tags

Open Graph controls social cards, while your title tag and meta description control search results. Build those with the Meta Tag Generator, and check how the page behaves on phones with the Mobile Meta Checker. To confirm the page loads cleanly for crawlers, run it through the HTTP Header Checker. A short, strong headline helps too, and the Hook Generator can give you ideas. More guides are on our blog.

Before You Publish

Don’t put private or unreleased details into tags, since anyone can read them in the page source. Our Privacy Policy explains how data is handled here, and you can reach us through the Contact page with questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best og:image size?
1200 by 630 pixels is the safest choice for most platforms.

Why is my WhatsApp preview not showing the image?
The image may be too large, blocked, or not a full https address. WhatsApp also caches old previews, so a new file name can help.

Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
Not as a direct ranking factor. They improve how shared links look, which can bring more clicks and visits.

Do I need separate Twitter Card tags?
Usually not. X falls back to Open Graph, though twitter:card gives you control over the card style.

Where do I paste the generated code?
Inside the <head> of your page, or into the Social tab of your SEO plugin.
